It’s a big weekend in the Camogie calendar as supporters make a welcome return at the National League Division 1 final between Galway and Kilkenny at Croke Park this Sunday, June 20th (7:30pm).
Recently, we caught up with four-time Galway All-Star Ailish O’Reilly from Oranmore/Maree Camogie Club.
Winning All-Ireland senior camogie titles in 2013 and 2019, the 26-year-old forward netted two goals in the 2019 All Ireland decider as the Tribeswomen saw off Kilkenny in a rip-roaring spectacle.
A primary schoolteacher by profession, Ailish, who is also a talented basketballer, is delighted to be back playing camogie. With so many club and county games televised and streamed in a Covid-hit 2020, she hopes that camogie coverage will continue to improve this season.
“Even with the club, there were one or two games on Facebook Live last year, but it wasn’t very visible,” says Ailish. “So, going forward, you would hope that there would be a proper system set up, like in Galway club hurling.
“Last year we watched hurling games we’d never have watched, because it was something and you’d just hope camogie would get the same level of coverage, at both county and club,” concludes Ailish.
