]]>A wedding is a very special occasion for people that can be celebrated in many different ways. It is a day that is filled with love, laughter, and happiness, and it is a time for friends and family to come together to celebrate the wedding of two people in love.
If you have been invited to a wedding recently in Ireland and you are wondering what to give the happy couple as a wedding gift, then you won't find anything better or more personal than a personalised wedding themed gift.
Personalised gifts are a great way to show your love and appreciation for the newly weds and to make their special day that bit more memorable.
There are of course many different options and types of personalised gifts that you can give to the newly weds that they can treasure and appreciate for years to come. And we have always found that the best wedding gifts are those that reflect the personalities and interests of the couple.
For example, if the couple is into golf or hurling, whether it be as players of the game or supporters then a personalised gift themed around their beloved sport will most certainly be well received. Below you'll find a list and link to our most popular sport themed gifts that can all be personalised for the couple as a thoughtful wedding gift.
It's not uncommon these days that the newly married or soon to be married couple will already be living together and have their own house so maybe a personalised wedding gift that is more themed to their home and home decor.
For example, they are sure to have taken plenty of lovely photos on the day itself, so maybe a more traditional personalised photo frame. You can add their name, the wedding date & venue etc.. or even a thoughtful custom message wishing them the very best for their future together.
Slate items such as slate coasters, slate placemats and slate hanging signs have also become very popular over the last number of years. They are not only practical gifts but can also add to the decor of the couple home.
Our personalised slate heart shaped hanging sign has proved a popular wedding gift idea for those already living together and makes a lovely display piece for the home that is sure to be cherished for years to come.
It's important to think about the couple's tastes and preferences when choosing a gift. If they are foodies, a personalised cookbook or customised kitchen gadget might be perfect. If they love to travel, a personalised notebook or journal might be more suitable to record their many adventures together. It's also a good idea to consider the couple's home decor style and choose a personalised gift that will fit in with their home.
When it comes to purchasing a wedding gift here in Ireland, there is no hard and fast rule about how much you should ideally spend. The amount you spend on a gift will depend on your relationship with the couple, your budget, and your personal preferences. As a general guideline, it's a good idea to spend around €50-€100 on a personalised wedding gift. However, if you are close friends or family of the couple, you may choose to spend more.
Traditionally, wedding gifts are given at the wedding reception. This is a time when the couple is surrounded by family and friends and when they are likely to receive many gifts. If you are attending the wedding, it's a good idea to bring your gift with you and present it to the couple during the reception.
If you have been invited to a wedding but are unable to attend, it's still a good idea to send a gift to the couple. This shows that you are thinking of them and that you wish them all the best on their special day and that you are sorry that you will be unable to attend. You can choose to have the gift delivered to the couple's home or to the wedding venue if it is possible and ideally do this a week or two in advance of the wedding day if possible.

]]>In this post, we will explore the benefits of personalising your own photo frames, as well as some ideas for customising them to make them truly a one-of-a-kind gift.
One of the biggest benefits of a personalised photo frame, whether its for your own home or as a gift for a loved one - is that they are unique and one-of-a-kind.
Unlike generic frames that can be found in a store, custom photo frames are engraved to suit your specific need and occasion. For example, you can choose the size, colour, and style of the frame to match your homes decor and you can add your own choice of custom engraved names, date or a thoughtful message to make it truly special and unique.
Another benefit of personalised photo frames is that they can serve as a reminder of special memories or moments in your life or the life of a loved one. For example, a custom wedding photo frame with the couple's names and their wedding date engraved on it makes a thoughtful and unique gift idea that can serve as a lasting reminder of their special day.
Similarly, a personalised graduation photo frame with the graduate's name, year of graduation or a custom message can make a lovely gift idea for the proud parents or even as a gift for their extremely proud grandparent(s).
When it comes to customising your photo frame, there are a few options to choose from. Some popular ideas include:
From the above list and personal experience, I would highly recommend that you have your photo frames 'laser engraved'. Laser engraving offers precision and durability and is garanteed to last a life time. This method allows for a high level of detail and accuracy, resulting in a crisp, clear and clean design.
Here at Shuul Gifts we have engraved many frames for people to suit many different occasions. Below are a few examples and ideas of what people are engraving their photo frames:
As you can see from the above list when it comes to choosing what exactly you want engraved on your frame, the choices are endless. A name, date and thoughtful message suited to the ocassion is very popular these days and makes a lovely gift idea for a loved one.
When purchasing a personalised photo frame, it's important to consider the quality of the frame. You want to make sure that the frame is well-made and durable, as it will be holding and displaying your precious memories.
Additionally, it's important to pay attention to the size of the frame and the size of the photo that you plan to display in it, so you can be sure that the photo will fit perfectly.
One other consideration when purchasing a personalised photo frame is the cost. Some custom frames can be expensive, but it's important to remember that they are unique and special, and often serve as a lasting reminder of a special memory, a lost loved one or treasured moment. It may be worth investing a little more money in a high-quality, custom frame that will last for years to come.
In conclusion, personalised photo frames are a great way to add a personal touch to any room or space. They are unique, special, and can serve as a lasting reminder of special memories and moments. They also make great gifts for any occasion and something to consider for the next special event in your life. So, whether you're looking for a custom wedding photo frame, a personalised graduation photo frame, or a custom family photo frame, there is something for everyone.

The personalised golf themed hip flask was one of my favourites (we do brandies for birdies!) and I still have my personalised cufflinks which are always on standby for the next wedding.
I remember my brother who is a journalist and a keen writer getting a personalised leather notebook which he was over the moon with.
It can be hard to know where to start when thinking of ideas for groomsmen gifts. You want them to appreciate them and you definitely want your groomsmen to know you put some real thought into shopping for them.
While it’s a well known Ireland tradition to gift your Best Man and Groomsman on the day of the wedding, it’s also an important gesture to thank them for being a loyal brother or friend for so many years.
The below list of Ideas for groomsmen gifts will hopefully save you time and help you choose a gift that is worthy of marking such a wonderful occasion.
Best of all, these engraved groomsmen gifts are beautifully packaged and are gifts you’ll be proud to hand over to those loyal men by your side.
But first lets talk about a few questions you might have before you set out researching and buying gifts that will resonate with your wedding party.
Oh the big question! Who’s job is it to buy the groomsmen gifts? Is it the bride or the groom? Well normally it's the groom.
While sometimes the bride will decide to give the groomsmen a token of her appreciation, it’s typically the groom who should take the responsibility of choosing the gifts for his groomsmen and best man.
After all, he is the one who knows them best and has a better idea of what each one will be thankful for.
If you’re wondering how much you should spend on groomsmen gifts, I’m not going to annoy you with an answer like ‘it depends’. I can tell you from what we see on a daily basis that the average spend per groomsman is around €30 to €35
For example, a lovely personalised hip flask presented in a nice black gift box with cups and a funnel is right in this price range, as are the personalised cufflinks for groomsmen and wallets.
To be honest, it’s more about the meaning of the gift and that they are nicely presented and packaged, rather than how much they cost. That’s exactly why we focus so much on our gift packaging.
Hopefully as you read on and see the following list of groomsmen gifts, it will help you pick the right gift at a price that’s suitable for your budget.
Good advice to keep in mind when deciding what are good groomsmen gifts and what should a groomsman gift include would be to follow this criteria:
The good news is that the below list of groomsmen gifts fit all these criteria.
They can all be customised with a certain theme, personalised with a name, date and text, and most importantly, from hip flasks to cufflinks and wallets, they are items that your best man or groomsmen will actually use and thank you for.
Well this really is up to you but most groomsmen gifts will include their name (or nickname), the role i.e Groomsman, the date of the wedding and depending on the size of the gift and space for personalisation, you can add a thoughtful message.
The message can be a simple thank you, or something a little more clever like a saying your groomsman uses regularly, or even a private joke between the two of you.
With regards to how to spell Best Man or Groomsman, I hate being the spelling police here, (trust me, I’m not that guy), but this is a common error we see.
Best Man is 2 words while Groomsman is 1 word. When it comes to a personalised gift, it’s important to get it right.
First of all, the important thing to remember when deciding when to give your groomsmen their gifts is whether you see them using the gift on the day of the wedding?
If you’re giving them groomsmen cufflinks or a tie clip, then don’t leave it until the day of the wedding. They’ll want these prior to the big day so they have everything they’re wearing prepared.
Or if you decide on wallets for your groomsmen, it’s nice to use it on the day but we all know it can be a chore to switch wallets if you use it like a filing cabinet.
On the other hand, groomsmen hip flasks can be a nice little gesture to ease the nerves the morning of the wedding. It’s up to you whether you give it to them empty or full…I’m staying stump on that one!
As a side note, we do also see some grooms using gifts, mostly hip flasks, as ‘Will You Be My Groomsmen Gifts?’. So obviously this is some way out from the wedding, but is a nice way of breaking the news to a brother or friend that they’ll be a massive part of the most special day of your life.
So without further adieu, lets get to our list of groomsmen gift ideas to get your juices flowing. It's full of great items that your groomsman and best man are sure to appreciate.
]]>It’s a big weekend in the Camogie calendar as supporters make a welcome return at the National League Division 1 final between Galway and Kilkenny at Croke Park this Sunday, June 20th (7:30pm).
Recently, we caught up with four-time Galway All-Star Ailish O’Reilly from Oranmore/Maree Camogie Club.
Winning All-Ireland senior camogie titles in 2013 and 2019, the 26-year-old forward netted two goals in the 2019 All Ireland decider as the Tribeswomen saw off Kilkenny in a rip-roaring spectacle.
A primary schoolteacher by profession, Ailish, who is also a talented basketballer, is delighted to be back playing camogie. With so many club and county games televised and streamed in a Covid-hit 2020, she hopes that camogie coverage will continue to improve this season.
“Even with the club, there were one or two games on Facebook Live last year, but it wasn’t very visible,” says Ailish. “So, going forward, you would hope that there would be a proper system set up, like in Galway club hurling.
“Last year we watched hurling games we’d never have watched, because it was something and you’d just hope camogie would get the same level of coverage, at both county and club,” concludes Ailish.

We love our gaa coaching books – those that help to mould both the young and not-so-young Gaelic Games players and their mentors.
Currently, there are countless websites, podcasts and webinars offering insights and resources online, but as any GAA coach will tell you, a good book can also get the creative coaching juices flowing.
Here are six gaa coaching books that we have chosen (in no particular order) that coaches might find useful. And feel free to suggest the name of a book or other resource that you turn to and that might aid other coaches.
Lauded by former Dublin senior football manager Jim Gavin and ex-Roscommon footballer Paul Earley, among others, Give Us A Game boasts over 270 games that can be used on the training ground with underage and adult players.
Quite often, training sessions can be repetitive or intense – or both – but, O’Connor’s book offers coaches superb ideas on how they can introduce a bit of fun into their session while still focusing on the skills of the game and fitness.
O’Connor, the GAA’s Games Development manager, also divides up these games into six sections, namely: Chasing & Fleeing Games, Target Games, Court Games, Field Games, Part Invasion Games and Full Invasion Games.
A number of these will already be familiar to coaches and, credit to O’Connor, any game he picked up elsewhere he has referenced at the back of the book.
For those coaches looking to develop a games-based approach to training, this book is an essential tool.
Give Us A Game Available Here on Dublin GAA website
A collaboration between two of the above coaches, Creative Games Sense focuses on players’ decision-making by employing conditioned and modified games. Each is designed to challenge the player – not only in terms of learning the basic skills but to perform the skill in a games setting.
There are 12 chapters ranging from textbook skills to session preparation and include the themes of reading the game, developing the intelligence game, a successful approach to long kick passing and transition from defence to attack.
In addition to offering instruction on how best to approach these areas of play, the book may inspire coaches – Gaelic football and hurling/camogie – to modify these activities to suit their team. As coaching books go, Creative Game Sense is another gem.
Creative Game Sense Available Here from Issuu
Given this book was published in the United States, it can be taken that it is not a GAA book. What it is, however, is a comprehensive resource in cultivating a positive coaching strategy and creating a successful narrative around management and team.
Chambers, a former National League hockey coach, emphasises that the minute details – often overlooked by a coach – are just as important as the bigger subjects of team management, physical preparation, nutrition and psychological preparation, which he is also strong on.
In his book, Chambers challenges the reader/coach on self-management – their philosophies, values, ethical decision-making and their own time and stress management. He also establishes what team rules and values, the process of selecting captains, periodisation of training and the ideal performance state should look like.
Although this book may be difficult to find in a local bookshop, it is available online.

]]>With the return of the Gaelic games season eagerly anticipated next month, four-time All-Ireland winner and Dublin LGFA full-back Niamh Collins is put through her paces by the Shuul Colours team. As always, the questions range from the sane to the insane!
Find out who Niamh enjoys following on social media; who she’d trust to rescue her from a burning building; and does she think Mrs. Doubtfire was right or wrong to do what she did?
In addition to four All-Ireland medals, the celebrated 28-year-old Foxrock/Cabinteely defender, who made her debut for Dublin against Kerry in 2012, also boasts a National League medal and an All-Star.
She acknowledges she can’t wait for the competitive action to resume in May, when Dublin will meet Tipperary, Waterford and great rivals Cork in the group stages of the National League.
“Obviously, against our old rivals, Cork, we are going to have a big battle there,” says the data analyst. “It is just exciting to have a group, you’re just happy to be back! You are trying to keep fit (at the moment) because you know something important is coming up and, at the end of the day, you signed up to play football, not lift weights in your front room.
“So, it has been a tough couple of months; it is very difficult when you are on your own in that aspect. So, I am just looking forward to being with my team again. That is the most thing I’m really excited for,” she concludes.

A panellist when Kerry won the Munster senior championship in 2017, Emma made her debut against Waterford the following year. Her aspiration for 2021 is that The Kingdom can build on their strong showings over the last couple of seasons to secure promotion back to Division 1 of the National League.
In 2020, the 21-year-old student teacher won a Kerry junior championship with Dr. Crokes, but this year she hopes to line out with her home club Glenflesk, who have re-formed their senior team.

]]>After almost a decade in hibernation, Cavan camogie, led by captain Erinn Galligan, returned to the inter-county scene in 2020. In what was one of the fairy-tale sports stories of the year, Jimmy Greville’s charges won the Nancy Murray Cup, defeating Tyrone in the final.
They subsequently advanced to the Premier All-Ireland Junior Final following an impressive 2-16 to 1-6 victory over Roscommon. While they lost the decider to Armagh, it was a remarkable journey for Cavan camogie and their captain.
In addition to the Nancy Murray Cup triumph, Erinn – also a noted ladies footballer who has enjoyed success with Cavan LGFA and Lacken – was to the fore in aiding her camogie club Crosserlough to the five-in-a-row of county titles last year, having previously won a brace of Ulster titles with the club as well.
This week, Shuul Colours caught up with the 33-year-old pharmacist as she shared her thoughts on a myriad of topics, from Van Halen to Shepherd’s Pie!
Van Halen - Jump

For obvious reasons – but also because this complicated six-storyline rom-com fails to pull it together, which like Antrim and its rich club history, is surprising at inter-county level.
The tag-line to this rom-com is ‘Naughty Can Be Nice’ – although any side that has played against Armagh might say different!
That’s how we feel about the Carlow jersey. Absolutely love it.
Simply because, like this film, Mickey Graham’s men brought a little old-fashioned romance back to the Ulster championship in 2020.
The 1990s had that feel about when it came to the Clare hurlers – that any moment Ger Loughnane or Anthony Daly were about to break into ‘The Winner Takes it All’, ‘I Have A Dream’ or ‘Waterloo’.
Still in production, a candle for every year since 2005 when the Cork hurlers last won the Liam McCarthy Cup.
It may be a modern-day rom-com about not ruining Christmas, but Happiest Season in Derry will always be their All-Ireland winning campaign of 1993.
These guys and gals always seem to be up for a laugh. Long live Donegal Tuesday!
Featuring heroes and giants of the 1960s and wizards from the 1990s, Down GAA, as the tag-line goes, is “not just your basic, average, every-day, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy-tale”. Rated PG!
Six All-Irelands-in-a-row, and no sign of stopping. This Dublin team is simply As Good As It Gets. Jack Nicholson’s compulsive-obsessive character reflects the Dubs obsession with being the very best.
One of only 2 counties not yet to win a provincial title, Fermanagh fans long for that day they can win that elusive Ulster championship.
After delivering one of the most lyrical acceptance speeches in GAA history, we reckon that 1980 All-Ireland winning hurling captain Joe Connolly – with his black, curly hair and Hollywood smile – could easily play the part of The Wedding Singer’s Robbie Hart.
No All-Ireland win since 2014 for the market leaders, so that itch is getting worse! We were also considering the classic comedy ‘Pat & Mike’, in honour of the amazing Pat Spillane and Mikey Sheehy who have a combined 16 All Ireland medals.
On five occasions, the Lilywhites have finished runners-up in All-Ireland footballs finals and another 22 times they have been the bridesmaids in Leinster deciders. That adds up to 27 in any man’s language!
We thought about going with The Truth About Cats & Dogs, but there’ll be no telling tales here. Instead, this rom-com is all about Kilkenny’s 2021 pursuit of Liam McCarthy.
In the 1915 hurling All Ireland final it was reported that it rained so much that the players wore overcoats in the second half! Laois didn’t care, they emerged victorious to win their only Senior All Ireland to this day.
Leitrim’s Connacht Final win in 1994 was as unexpected as Katherine Heigl’s pregnancy in Knocked Up! Well unexpected to everyone bar the team and management who had backed themselves at odds of 16 – 1. The win breathed new life in to the county for years to come.
With its new theme tune of ‘Limerick You’re A Lady’, this reimagining is a tale of a sophisticated management team – backed by great wealth – romancing a down-and-out lady and turning her into a beautiful princess!
The opening remark of an optimistic Longford supporter each season since their last Leinster SFC title in 1968.
Known as the most controversial Leinster Final in history, in 2010 Louth were making their first appearance in the final for 50 years and had one hand on the cup until that Joe Sheridan incident leaving them, well, sick.
It was that or How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, adapted for the Croke Park stage and re-titled ‘How to Lose An All-Ireland in 10 Ways!’ Or even 'Play it Again, Sam'. However, we felt that was too cruel. Mayo for Sam.
Oh I so wish the movie 'Tough Guys' was a rom-com! But sticking to the theme we went with Tin Cup - Talented and stubborn, with a bit of romance thrown in.
In 2018 there was love in the air when Monaghan made their 13th All Ireland semi-final appearance after a 30 year wait. Unfortunately like this movie, the ending wasn’t great!
For Offaly hurlers, it was Forgetting ‘Babs’ Keating – and his sheep in a heap! In football, their No. 1 rom-com these days is ‘There’s Something About Maughan’ – and how good he looks in shorts!
While this rom-com starred Lindsay Lohan it was another Lohan, Gerry whose luck was in when he scored in injury time to win the Connacht title for the Rossies in 2001, sending Hyde Park (and Rockfords!) beserk.
Unfortunately for the Yeats County, the Sam McGuire or Liam McCarthy find themselves having never been kissed by a Sligo captain. There have been some good days though like the 2007 Connacht title win.
Like this movie, watching the Tipp footballers 2020 campaign gave everyone a feel good factor and brought a little romance back to the football championship.
And it did when long-serving manager Mickey Harte stood down after 18 years at the helm of their senior footballers.
Will ye feckin get married already?!! Its like the Waterford hurlers are on a long engagement and everyone wants them to have their big day out soon.
With the help of the late great Páidí Ó Sé, in 2004 Westmeath removed themselves from the list of counties never to have won a provincial title. And apparently it was some night!
In Wexford, they call it Vinegar Hill. This one tells the tale of an unlikely romance between a Clare man and the Model County. ‘I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her!’
Still waiting for a Leinster SFC title, Wicklow’s footballers would undoubtedly concur with the tagline: ‘The longer you wait, the harder it gets!’

We're delighted to launch the series with an interview with Roscommon GAA Ladies Footballer Honor Ennis.

Even using only the finest 925 Sterling Silver in the industry, silver can lose its shiny luster if not properly cared for.
By following some very simple & quick care techniques you’ll find that your new jewellery will keep looking as beautiful as the day you received it for a long time to come.
Proper sterling silver jewelry care includes being aware of how you wear it, store it, and clean it. So lets take a quick look at what exactly is 925 sterling silver and how to care for it.
Pure Silver alone is a very soft, very malleable material which could be easily damaged. So for use in the jewellery industry, Silver is combined with other stronger materials (alloys) to produce a more durable and longer lasting product.
The most popular of these alloys is sterling silver, which consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper or zinc.
With centuries of experimentation by silversmiths, copper has been proven to be the best companion metal as it improves the silver's hardness and durability without taking away of its beautiful shine or colour.
With only a small amount of copper added to the silver, it has very little effect on the silvers value.
Tarnishing (which is also referred too as oxidation) is a result of oxygen or sulfur coming into contact with sterling silver. Tarnished silver can have a duller and even sometimes a dark appearance.
When it comes to 925 Sterling Silver (this can actually apply to most jewellery materials), how you store your piece is as important as how you wear your piece of jewellery.
With oxygen and moisture been ever present in the air, this can over time dull the shine of sterling silver. So when storing away your piece for a later wear or occasion, here are a few simple storage tips:
Did you know that the natural oils present in your skin can (and do) actually help protect and clean your silver jewellery.
However, there are many situations where it is best to remove your jewellery:
Even the very best cared for jewellery pieces will sometimes need a little cleaning. And this is best achieved by giving it a little polish. Here's a few tips on polishing your sterling silver:
With ongoing care, your new Shuul Colours sterling silver jewellery pieces can be ensured a long lasting life.

In the mens football Dublin claimed an historic 3 in a row when Stephen Cluxton lifted the Sam Mcguire after an enthralling battle against Mayo. There were plenty of talking points in this one, but the occasion and game itself will live long in the memory. Two fantastic amateur teams gave their all in front of a packed crowd of loyal fans.

The following week seen the same two teams meet again but this time it was the Ladies All Ireland Football final. Once more it was Dublin who came out on top, making up for other All Ireland defeats in recent years. A fascinating statistic about this game is that it was the largest attendance at any womens sporting final in the world in 2017!
The wind and rain would not deter Cork winning the Senior Camogie final against a gallant Kilkenny on a scoreline of 10 points to 9. In doing so they nudged ahead of Dublin in the roll of honour, Cork now with 27 Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championships.
But thats the big guns! What about all the other grades at which All Ireland finals took place during 2017.
At SHUUL, we thought we'd put together the definitive list of inter county All Ireland winners in 2017 in Football & Camogie at all levels.
All codes have different grades and structures so we did our very best to include just those that go to All Ireland level.
If you think we're missing any feel free to comment below.
So grab a cuppa and check out all results below!
Hope you enjoyed reading through this list of All Ireland winners in 2017 and hopefully your county is on there somewhere. If not, then as the saying goes, there's always next year!

She was not a promising underage star growing up and yet, through sheer hard-work and determination, she has firmly established herself as a first-choice player on the Tribeswomen’s flagship team.
Having played an integral role in Galway’s impressive 3-12 to 1-8 victory over Mayo in the Connacht final at McHale Park, Castlebar in early July, vice-captain Lisa and her team-mates are now looking forward to an All-Ireland quarter-final showdown against reigning All-Ireland champions Cork or Ulster finalists Monaghan on August 19.
However, it is her progress that captures the imagination, particularly given the Kilkerrin/Clonberne native’s relationship with the maroon and white could only be described, at best, as a flirtation during her teenage years.
“I went to a few trials at underage but it wasn’t until after minor really that I got into it,” says the 25-year-old midfielder. “That was because of our club set-up. We were an All-Ireland winning team 10 or 12 years ago but the club went downhill for a time after that."
“However, we just got a rise back into the club again – new management took over – and there was a burst of energy after that. That is what got me going again but it definitely wasn’t until I was 19 or 20 before I really broke into the county scene.”
While she did not make her county debut until 2014 – against Monaghan – from there on in she toiled tirelessly to build her game and earn her time on the field of play. And the closer she has got to nailing down a starting berth, the harder she has fought to wear the jersey.
“Sure, look, the work-rate has to be there but it is the support as well. The support you get from management in both club and county is massive. I am very lucky to be part of a very successful club set-up,” says Lisa, who has four county senior club football championship medals to her name to date.
No doubt, as a role model for young women in sport, she boasts of all the attributes but, she notes, there are others there in Galway’s senior squad who equally deserve the recognition.
“To look in-house, there are plenty. Emer Flaherty and Sinead Burke are unbelievable rolemodels. They have such pace and such strength and dedication and professionalism and the way they go about things.
You have a lot of players outside our set-up, in Dublin and Donegal and Cork as well, but we have plenty of role models in Galway.”
On the international scene, she says the Williams’ sisters are among those she admires. While Serena may be the more successful of the pair with 23 grand slam titles, she pays homage to 37-year-old Venus, a seven-time grand slam winner, who recently contested the Wimbledon singles final.
“The Williams sisters are serious role models – players who are ambassadors for their sport. They drive for respect for women in sport and that is the sort of role model I look up to,” she says.
This “drive for respect” is what most women in sport can relate to, as underlined by the stance taken by the Republic of Ireland women’s soccer team earlier this year. However, Gannon maintains advances are being made.
“Definitely, yeah, especially when you look at the set-up now (in ladies’ football). It has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years. It has gone so professional in the background. From your gym strength and conditioning to your fitness testing to nutrition to training on the pitch. It is unbelievable.
I think though, to be successful, you can’t have one of those without the other. If you are working on your strength and conditioning but your nutrition isn’t right, it is not going to balance out for you. Nutrition, for example, is as important to your recovery as it is for fuelling. So, this goes hand in hand with your other work and if you don’t do one of those you are never going to reach 100%.”
Given the level of commitment and dedication required at inter-county level, and the countless hours it commands, Lisa is relieved to have chosen the career of a secondary school teacher. “Yeah, to be honest, being a teacher, I do have it ideal. I don’t know how other players do it,” she smiles.
“We have nurses on the team, along with doctors, physiotherapists and so on, and I don’t know how they do it. Because there are a lot of hours involved. I suppose, the passion is there and if you want to do it, you will turn up at training. I definitely find with the teaching it does help to have the hours off when you are in peak season over the Summer.”
That said, one suspects she wouldn’t have it any other way. She has toiled, laboured and fought for the privilege of donning the maroon and white of Galway. Has it been worth it?
You bet it has and she hopes she can now be a role model for others with similar ambitions.
“Hopefully they (young girls) see you as someone who is hard-working, someone who is training, and someone who is dedicated to something and putting 100% into it. Being an athlete is a great role model for young girls.
I think though, when you look at the club set-up in Galway as well, even in my own club Kilkerrin/Clonberne and other clubs like Claregalway, they deserve a lot of praise because the underage set-ups there are unbelievable. You can see it in our (county) minors, U-16s and U-14s this year. They are so successful,” she concludes.
No doubt when the analysts talk about Galway ladies football in 2017 that word 'successful' will be closely aligned with Lisa Gannon!
Galway play Cork or Monaghan in the LGFA All-Ireland senior quarter-final on the weekend of August 19.
The Galway U-16s and minors contest All-Ireland deciders on Wednesday, July 26 and Bank Holiday Monday, August 7. Already in 2017, the Galway U-14 girls claimed All-Ireland glory with victory over Kerry.
